Our Ex-Battery Chickens

In the summer of 2010 we rescued 6 ex-battery hens from the Diana Brimblecombe Animal Rescue Centre (DBARC), in Wokingham, Berkshire.  Chickens are great fun to keep and the fresh eggs each day are delicious. However the chickens do insist on getting up with the sun, which quite frankly is far too early in the height of summer for most sane people.

Having searched online for an automated horizontal Chicken Coop Door Opener, we were very disappointed that we could only find vertical door openers, so set about building our own DIY style.

A few days and trips to the local model shop later, we housed everything in an ice cream tub and screwed it to the coop. The video below is our first test run.

Our chicken door opener is 12v with a solar panel recharging the battery and is timed using a modified central heating timer. Inspiration for our project came from Mark's blog.
